Each of our stainless steel posts comes with pre drilled holes at 665mm centres and a welded base plate. The kit also includes glass clamps suitable for 8mm 10mm & 12mm glass with relevant rubbers and fixing screw, a cover plate to give a neat finish and a handrail support.
The finished height with a handrail is 1100mm and the finished height with an end cap would be 1000mm.

I have planning permission to erect a 7m x 3m balustrade on an existing flat roof. The roof has a conventional timber joist structure. Because I had to seek planning, I'm also subject to building control. Building control were content to accept DC Iron test certificate for the post but required evidence by calculation or test to show the integrity of the attachment. Having reinforced the roof structure, my intention was to attach one post and apply an appropriate horizontal loading at handrail height. I fixed the post in position but found significant deflection occurred just from relatively light loads (eg a bending moment on the post of 0.38kN-m caused approx 25mm deflection at the top of the post. On closer inspection, it was apparent that the post was deflecting within the base plate! It was observed that the post is welded to the base plate only on the underside but looking on the upper side of the base plate, there was a very fine gap between the post and hole in the plate which could be seen to flex when the post was loaded. The test certificate records approx 10mm deflection with a point load of 1.5kN (i.e. a bending moment 1.65kN-m).
In order to conduct the test for building control I used a base plate (SSBP11042) bought previously to which I had welded a 42.4 mm carbon steel tube. In this case the tube was rim welded to the underside of the plate (similar to the DC Iron post assembly) and a fillet weld was made between the post and the plate on the upper side. The test post was fixed to the roof structure using M10 coach screws and loaded to create a bending moment of 1.2kN-m with no deflection or damage to the roof structure. Significant distortion did however occur to the base plate as shown in the attached images. These observations and results raise questions about the validity of the test certificate.
